Trains -The Other Travel Option
Nowadays, traveling by train is not the most popular choice among travelers. One reason for this is that air travel is the fastest way to get from place to place. Traveling by car is obviously more convenient, and choosing to travel by bus is usually the most affordable option available. However none of these methods of travel will give you the unique travel experience that going by train will.
Train travel is not the most popular mode of travel these days. The reason for that could be the length of time a train trip takes compared to traveling by air. Another reason might be the monotony of sights to see while traveling on the train, which may prove boring for some travelers. Another reason could be the price of a train ticket which could be more than it would cost to take the bus. All of these reasons could contribute to the lack of popularity for train travel, this does not mean however that you should not take the train. With a little creativity and preparation you could have a fantastic trip on the train.
Be prepared for a long trip. Many people make the mistake of being anxious about travel time and are under prepared for the length of travel. Be aware that trains may halt frequently for stops and for border crossings, and so will take their time getting to their destinations. If you understand this ahead of time, it will make your travel much easier and much more enjoyable.
So with this in mind, sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery. If you are traveling during the daytime, you may be able to see sights you would not normally get to see if you are driving, or taking the bus or plane. You can even bring binoculars to see the views more clearly. If you enjoy reading, this is the time to bring that novel for your book club you have not yet finished. Or maybe you can finish that report for work so you can really enjoy your trip once you arrive at your destination.
If you are not into reading or enjoying the scenery, bring along a CD player or your iPod. Make sure to load your iPod library with all of your favorite songs, or bring along plenty of CD?s. Make sure to bring extra batteries or your charger. Be friendly and polite to your fellow travelers, you never know when you could make a new friend, or at least spend some time in pleasant conversation while on board the train.
Be kind and courteous to those around you and to the staff. The staff is, of course, trained to be extremely courteous, but at times tensions among passengers may flare due to boredom or irritation. Long train rides afford an opportunity to meet people you might not otherwise have the opportunity to know. Take the time to be friendly and make acquaintances. You are always free to move about the train, so don’t feel confined to meeting those with whom you are seated.
If you are traveling with children, make sure you bring enough activities to keep them occupied. Not only do you not want to have to deal with your own child bored on a train, neither do other passengers. Bring some books and small quiet toys. Another good idea on the train is hand held video games, just remember to keep the volume down so as not to bother others. Lastly you may want to bring a few snacks and a small pillow or blanket for a nap. This way they will be entertained and you will be able to enjoy your train trip even more.
